We want to bring our vision of the garden as an instrument of change to the wider public. We hope to secure a small parcel of land in the city and create a community space focusing on education and research, demonstrating the principles of permaculture. Permaculture is a marriage of the concepts of permanence and agriculture to form a philosophy that employs ecological design to nurture sustainability in all (or as many as possible) aspects of human life. Here at our demonstration site, the experienced and neophyte gardeners can learn the fundamentals of ecological design, incorporating all the elements available in order to maximize the productivity of the space while wasting little or no energy. Our vision is to turn our community into a passel of producers instead of consumers.
At the heart of this movement is showing people how to grow their own food and letting people know that there is an inherent satisfaction and ease in the process. The benefits go beyond fresh summer salads and tomatoes put up for winter. We envision sending people back to their homes to create their own edible landscapes and add to the local economy by becoming an integral part of it. By teaching people to engage in their own food production, we see an opportunity to break the cycle of cause and effect of overconsumption.
Urban agriculture with an aesthetically pleasing, yet functional design is an option for all city dwellers, whether it’s a planter box full of herbs or a city lot with every inch devoted to edible plantings. We want to help our community feed their families today and do it with an eye toward the future, and their children’s future.
